Procedure
After introducing ourselves, we will go over the basic settings for moon photography, discuss what effect focal length has on composition and camera settings, and best practices for using a tripod. As the moon will still be high in the sky, we will practice a series of guided exercises to understand better the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and depth of field at various focal lengths. After this, the moon will be low enough in the sky to really combine it with the cityscape, such as the Kölner Dom or Altstadt, and we will briefly discuss composition. Then, it’s time for you to photograph! While you are photographing, the trainer will go around, take a look over your shoulder, give tips and answers any questions you might have.
After the moon has set, we will discuss what went right, what challenges you had, and how you can plan your own moon photoshoot with apps like Photopills.
Notes
This course is suitable for those who have some experience with photography and using a tripod. A tripod and tripod head is required. A camera with manual settings options is also required, but brand is not important. A remote shutter release/camera app is recommended but not mandatory. Typical zoom lens 70-200mm, one prime lens 35mm or 50mm. Optional but very helpful for detail shots: 400mm or longer.
The photography course takes place in all weathers. Weather-related clothing is therefore necessary.
